Le Thanh Phuong was born in 1825 in My Phu village, Xuan Vinh (My Phu hamlet, An Hiep commune, Tuy An district at the present). In 1885, responding to the Royal Proclamation of King Ham Nghi, he and some patriot scholars in Phu Yen gathered the soldiers and raised the standard to fight against the French colonialism. He was assigned by King Ham Nghi as “Thong Soai Quan vu Dai Than”. (Commander-in-chief).
In 2 years of 1885 – 1886, the insurgent troops of Le Thanh Phuong won many battles and owned a large area from Phu Yen to Binh Thuan. Filled with terror of the strength of Can Vuong Phu Yen troops, in 2/1887, the French troops gathered the forces to put down the movement. On 14/02/1887, Le Thanh Phuong was caught and imprisoned in An Tho Prison. They used all tricks to entice and bribe him but all they received was the immortal sentence “Ninh Tho Tu, Bat Ninh Tho Nhuc” (It means “Better a glorious death than a shameful life”).
On 20/02/1887 (i.e. January 28th of Lunar year 1887) Le Thanh Phuong was executed to death at Cay Dua Pier which was restored today. Le Thanh Phuong’s Grave on Da Trang Mountain, near Quan Cau Pass was restored solemnly. Le Thanh Phuong Temple was constructed under the foot of Da Chong mountain.
Every year, on his death anniversary (the 28th of Lunar January), the local people organize the festival at Le Thanh Phuong Temple which attracts thousands of visitors everywhere.
Le Thanh Phuong Grave and Temple was recognize as the National historical relic on 27/9/1996.
